A good vacation comes from good planning. Check all the essentials before leaving the house, whether you’re preparing for adventure or relaxation. Packing, travel plans, and vacation activities are all prepared. But what about your homes? Other than locking the doors on your way out, your HVAC for vacation is a serious matter to consider.

How should you prepare your HVAC for vacation? How can you avoid issues, save money, and protect your home when leaving for a few days, weeks, or even months? As HVAC pros, we’ve got the answers.

1. Adjust the Thermostat

Set your thermostat with two goals: saving money and protecting your home interior. You want your HVAC to not work too hard but prevent extreme temperature changes. For this, consider the season.

In the summer, set your AC to about 85°F/29°C. This will ensure it runs as little as possible while preventing paint-peeling and equipment-damaging heat.

In the winter, set the heater to 55°F/13°C. This will minimize heat cycles but keep your pipes and possessions from freezing.

2. Consider Programmable Thermostats

A programmable thermostat is the perfect solution for vacations or seasonally empty homes. You can set it to keep your home within the desired range (55 to 75 F) and to align with your vacation schedule. A smart thermostat could adjust according to weather forecasts or even remotely set the home’s temperature a few hours before your arrival.

3. Change Air Filters

Before departing on vacation, make sure to replace or clean the air filter in your HVAC system to ensure smooth operation. This guarantees a clear flow of air, effective removal of dust and allergens, and enhanced indoor air quality upon your return.

4. Inspect HVAC Equipment

The last thing you want to deal with is an HVAC failure while on vacation or away for the season. Therefore, it’s best to have your HVAC inspected and tuned up before you go. Your technician will check for signs of damage, leaks, unusual noises, or loose wiring. You can address small repairs before you go so that everything is in ship shape (with no unwanted temperature spikes) when you get back.

5. Close Curtains or Blinds

UV rays and temperature changes both come from uncovered windows. Closing the curtains or blinds can protect your home from sun fading and improve your heating and cooling energy savings while you are away.

6. Unplug Non-Essential Electronics

Did you know many electronics use power even when not in use or switched off? To prevent both wasted energy and the risk of electrical fires, it is important to unplug any non-essential electronics throughout the house. Strips or smart outlets can make it even easier when leaving and getting everything set back up when you return.

7. Consider HVAC Maintenance

If your HVAC system is due for maintenance, consider scheduling a service appointment before your vacation. This will ensure everything is in good condition and working efficiently while you’re gone and when you return.

8. Set the Water Heater to Vacation Mode

If you have a tank-style water heater (which most homes still have), you don’t need to heat water constantly while you’re away. Set it to ‘vacation mode’, switch it off, or turn down the temperature setting to room temperature to conserve energy while you’re away.

For tankless water heaters, consult the manufacturer’s instructions.

9. Arrange for Someone to Check In

Depending on the length of your vacation, you may want to ask a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member to check on your home once a week while you are away. They can ensure everything is in order and address any issues that might arise until you return.
